UB Reviews: Keith Sweat’s ‘Playing for Keeps’ Indeed

One of our favorites, veteran recording artist Keith Sweat is celebrating over 30 years in the music industry. He has released his 13th studio album entitled “Playing for Keeps” via his imprint KDS Entertainment.

The set kicks off with “Eenie Meenie Miney Mo,” the trap influenced hood track is something different for Keith. Through the lyrics and vocals, it truly showcases his confidence when he steps in the booth. Something that has kept him in the game over 30 years. RayFade adds an even extra sauce to the mix, one of the most stand out tracks on “Playing for Keeps.” Keith being not only an artist, but a songwriter and producer as well, he’s fully responsible for the success of most of his hits.

This album showcases his ability to change with the times and do it effortlessly. On tracks like the baby-making “Pull Up” and “Bae Bae” that classic Keith Sweat sound is front and center. The song “Get Up In It” gets down to the nitty-gritty. With lyrics like “Once I get in it, I’m gonna get all up in it…I’m gonna handle my business!”

Another highlight on the album is “Fuego,” a stand-out track with a real reggae feel to it. Jamaican Dance-hall artist Alkaline brings the extra heat, to make it as close to perfection as it gets. RayFade also appears on that track.

“Boomerang” with newcomer Candace Price, is currently moving up the adult R&B charts. These two blended voices together, work magic. It’s reminiscent of Keith‘s recordings with Athena Cage. Teddy Ryley, Akon & Tank also appear on the album, as well as K-Ci on the lead single “How Many Ways.”

After all these years Keith still doesn’t mind begging, as he states on the old school feel track “Big Ass Lie.”It’s clear to see Playing for Keeps has always been what Keith Sweat is about. This project creates yet another lane for the veteran artist. Regardless of the genre he’s recording, Keith continues to put quality music out.
